This isn’t my best work but I wanted to write some fic before Christmas, and I decided to write a fic related to War Crimes because that episode gives me all the feelings. This explores what would happen if Donna’s diary leaked. I hope you enjoy.
“I’ll just move to Nova Scotia. I hear it’s lovely there. And Sam told me the way, so I could probably get there, you know? Maybe I’ll get a job in a nice office, with a boss who has only been subpoenaed like a couple of times.”

in the middle of the the santos reelection campaign, josh learns that sam & donna had an affair during the bartlet administration and ends their relationship. when he decides he wants donna back, it’s too late.
“Mr. President?” Mrs. Fiderer was hesitant. The frustration on the President’s face was obvious. “Is everything ok? I heard a… wheezing.”
“Everything’s fine,” the President said, barely glancing up to respond.
“Ok, sir,” she responded, “I’ll just…” She headed to the door.
“Just because I haven’t met Julius Cesar doesn’t mean some baby faced doctor knows more about him than I do.”
The outburst startled Mrs. Fiderer. “Of course, sir.”
I had entirely forgotten the existence of this story and I’m now suddenly glad I’ve been having so much trouble sleeping recently that I started hitting random bookmarks in my fandom folder, because this is one of my favourite Josh-and-Donna-get-over-themselves-and-hook-up-already scenarios in West Wing fanfic. All of Speranza’s stuff is incredible. AND her website is still up, thanks heavens ;)
Josh asks Donna out. None of this tumbling into each other sideways nonsense - he (more or less) just steps the frak up and asks her.
Except they’re, you know, well, them.
I actually gave this prompt to Jess a while back - she did a really lovely job with it - but then inevitably it pretty much wrote itself in my head, too. I finished it right after I wrapped up A Different Kind Of Day - an emotional palate cleanser of sorts.

A Different Kind of Day.
Words by lovehermindlovehershoes, pictures by speakfree. What if Donna had been with Josh at Rosslyn? And what would have happened next?
Well, this has been a long time coming! This monster of a story began life as a throwaway plea for prompts one Friday night. I had to take a long-ish bus journey and I was worried I’d be bored. Little did I know… Over a month, and over 20,000 words later, I’ve re-surfaced from a parallel universe that’s become very precious to me.
The prompt was: “If Donna had been at Rosslyn — and been the one to find Josh or been shot instead?” (I absolutely categorically couldn’t bring myself to tackle the latter scenario. I have a hard enough time getting through the Gaza arc without copious quantities of hard liquor.)
For that, we have the lovely notabadday to thank. She’s single-handedly revitalised the West Wing fandom on Tumblr - the last few months have been a blast. And because she’s so awesome, as a way of saying thank you, I decided to crank this up a notch - sprinkle some fairy dust on it, if you will… And so behold, the beautiful front cover art, courtesy of the unspeakably talented speakfree. If you make it to the end of the very long story, you’ll find an equally stunning back cover!
A response to the following prompt from Emily:
This is a preview excerpt of the fic that is currently eating my life. Jess (notabadday) sent me a prompt last week: “If Donna had been at Rosslyn — and been the one to find Josh or been shot instead?” …and it accidentally took over my life. It’s currently three times the length of my longest posted story, and probably not quite halfway done. And I’m, like, obsessed with it. I hope you like this - I will do my level best to get the rest to you as soon as possible.
